Flowers have had a rich and interesting history dating back to the Elizabethan era, however it was during the Victorian era that the meaning of flowers flourished into a form of communication. The gesture of giving flowers was the preferred means of expressing one's feeling and emotions.
Presenting someone with a bunch of flowers gave an exclusive message deciphered by the colour, style and quantity of flowers. The most classic form of expression was a red rose, for love. Yet the presentation of a bouquet of flowers had other connotations, and again, the meaning of flowers was interpreted by the choice and presentation of the flowers.
While the gesture of giving flowers has long been, and still is, linked to romance, the meaning of flowers has much more depth than this.
People communicate through flowers because language of flowers is so passionate, and different flowers imply different meanings. Red roses have always implied passion and romance, whereas pink roses while just as gorgeous, have more platonic connotations. The lily on the other hand symbolises innocence and purity. Flower language is special and unique, and can pass on emotions and feelings that words can not convey
When the poet Robert Burns compared his lover to a red, red rose flower,
he was touching on the West's most ancient and potent flower lore,
the identification of the red rose with beauty and with deep and passionate love.
The red rose is often identified as well with love's pain.
In Greek myth, the goddess of love herself, Aphrodite, was said to have created the first red rose.
Rushing to comfort her lover, Adonis-who had been gored by a wild boar- she scratched herself on the thorns.
Her immortal blood forever stained the roses red.
When Cleopatra decided to seduce the Roman soldier Mark Antony, she met him in a chamber filled two feet deep with red rose petals.
